Long Leader and Dry Line - Flyfishing Strategy for Kamloops Area Lakes
Using a long leader with a dry line is a most effective flyfishing strategy for rainbow trout in Kamloops area lakes especially while fishing a bloodworm or chironomid fly pattern. It took a long time for me to develop the patience and will to use a longer leader but when I did my success increased immensely. To most river fisherman or novice fly casters, anything over a 9 foot leader seems pretty long but it doesn't come close to the 18'- 22' long leaders that we use here in the trophy lakes. Many of the Kamloops area lakes such as Pass, Morgan, White, Peter Hope, Plateau, Knouff, Community, Sheridan and Island have very clear water that allows light to penetrate down to the 20'depth level and more. This allows allows for photosynthesis to take place, even at 20 feet, promoting vegetation growth and with it, water insect production, particularly the bloodworm and chironomid. It is at these depths that this food supply lingers and evolves until they are ready to rise through the water column to emerge as a flying adult. Even if there are not chironomids rising to the surface, the fish will still feed on them at or near the bottom. There are 2 primary challenges to overcome to be successful when fishing a dry line with a long leader in 20 feet of water... Casting and patience. Casting such a long leader, especially if there is a breeze can be frustrating at first but graduated practice will help you along. I recommend taking a few sessions to learn casting the long leader, perhaps starting with 12' and increasing the length by about 2 feet at a time until you feel comfortable with the 20' leader. Yes, you will get tangles and wind knots but it's all part of the learning process. When retrieving, bring your line in as close as possible on the retrieve before recasting as you will have much more control in setting up the cast. On the back cast, one has to make sure the line and leader rollover behind you enough before starting the forward casting motion. A technique that worked for me was turning so that I was casting across my body rather than pointing my body to where I was casting. This way I could watch the backcast and time the forward motion more effectively with the leader rollover. It is also recommended to position one's self with the breeze at your back or slightly to your side. It allows the forward cast to lay out much easier. The second obstacle is having the patience to wait for the fly to reach the full depth of the leader. Bloodworms and especially chironomids have very little lateral movement other that what a slight current may supply. It is important that one mimicks this action as close as possible. Casting and waiting 5-10 minutes while the fly reaches the bottom is not unusual before starting the slow retrieve. Another trick to help casting efficiency and wait time is to use a weighted fly and add an additional weight to the leader in the form of tiny split shot much like a dropper fly but without the fly. (In British Columbia the use of a dropper is prohibited... but you can fish with 2 lines when by yourself... go figure.) The added weight assists the casting motion and gets the fly down to the desired depth faster. If you need to add splitshot, add from the first tippet knot (about 4'-6'above the fly). Add more shot if required but not too much as you don't want to make your line a weapon to self-inflict pain on one's self during a foul cast. Unless you can find a strike indicator that unlocks itself or is easily removable, I would not suggest that you use one for fishing deeper than about 14' if you are in a boat, or not longer than 10'if you are in a float tube or pontoon boat. It can be a tricky exercise to free the indicator and land the fish at the same time. You lose more fish that way. As mentioned above, chironomids and bloodworms have little lateral movement so one must fish with a dead slow retrieve. Many times these trophy rainbow trout will even hit on the dead hang. It doesn't hurt to try dragging these imitations through marl, stirring the bottom ever-so-lightly, attracting bottom cruisers. I have caught many large fish using the above strategy and find it particularly effective during the summer doldrums when the trout are deep during the day and in the spring before the water begins to warm up and the insects haven't started migrating to the surface yet. Give it a try. I'm sure that with some practice and patience you too will be catching more fish with a long leader and a dry line. Tight lines. This is going to be the seventh article and it?s great to see how many people are interested in the fun of fishing. These articles are meant to have tips that everyone can use. Most of the seasoned anglers might even find a helpful tip or two in these articles. Eventually I will turn this into an eBook so go ahead and take advantage of it now. Make sure you tell your friends and families about the fishing tips articles because all I ask in return is that you go out and enjoy the fine fun of fishing. 1. Fishing With Alka-Seltzer I learnt this trick by being snoopy and listening in on a couple of fishermen that were catching fish next to me while I was being shut out. When the fishing is slow and they won?t even take a slow moving jig then you want to change things up a little. In the end of a tube jig you want to put a couple pieces of Alka-Seltzer and then shove a little cotton against the tablets. When the water soaks through the cotton the hook will begin to fizz with almost assuredly will attract fish and even more fish strikes on days that strikes seem to be impossible to get. 2. Find The Trout This is a quick way to find pools of fish for the fly fisherman. Gather up a couple of the local bugs around the shores of your favorite fishing spot. Once you have the bugs you want to toss them in and around the pools to see if the fish surface and feed on them. Once you have established where the fish are you can then cast your fly into that certain pool. 3. Use More Bait Many times while you?re fishing the catch might be great but unfortunately you keep catching small fish. What you might want to do in this case is use bigger amounts of bait. Instead of one minnow you might want to use two. Remember that in most cases bigger fish want bigger baits. 4. Gloves For Fishing Catching some larger fish like pike and Muskie can prove to be quite dangerous when it comes to removing the hook. What you want to do is keep a good pair of buckskin gloves in your tackle box just for cases like this. Wear the gloves while getting the hook out of a large fish like this. Chances are the gloves will prevent the hook penetrating you skin incase the fish begin flopping. 5. Pork Rinds Can Be Bulky If you have to do a lot of walking then you want to minimize the amount of tackle you take with you. One trick to get out of hauling the big bulky pork rind jars is to put some pork rinds in a sealable plastic baggie that can be carried in your vest or a small tackle box. This is the end of my seventh edition on my series on fishing tips. I hope so far everyone is finding useful tips that they can use or save for a later day.

You usually see the words ?Gone Fishing? in a cartoon strip; on the bumper sticker of an RV, or printed inside one of those ?wish you were here? cards. The person has disappeared into a world of rest and relaxation. Yes, I?ve gone fishing. I?ve left the building. I?m not here; taking a break from all the problems of a hurried world. I?m fishing; slumbering in a makeshift hammock; pole propped up against some rocks; waiting, waiting, and more waiting; snoring, snoring, and more snoring. That?s the fantasy version. Now let?s see what fishing really is. What I?m going to do is catch a creature that I can?t see. He lives in a different element; I?m on the land, he?s in the water. The creature has a keen sense of smell, good eyesight, is sensitive to sound and light, and has an analytical brain. The only thing between us is a little hook. That, my friend, is known as fishing. Sport fishing is full of suspense and surprise. In order to nab this creature, I have to think like him. I?ll have to know all about his environment; water. Where is the current? Is it down deep in the river, or closer to the surface? Is it strong and swift, or just a slow meandering flow? What about temperature? This will determine his eating habits; and the size of his appetite. I?ll have to put all this information together to increase my chances of catching a fish. What about bait? I?ll have to be conscious about covering that glint of the hook. There?s a right way to bait a hook, and wrong way. And then there?s an array of food. This is a mental game; not for the lazy mind. You?ll have to use your best resources and knowledge to outsmart a fish; it requires patience and perseverance. The waiting can be tedious, but if you?ve done your homework, you?ll eventually make that catch. The fundamentals of fishing can easily be applied to all the challenges in life. First, there?s the learning curve; what am I trying to accomplish and where do I go for the data? What kind of water am I fishing in? Do I want to fish the wide open ocean, a stream; a small lake? What kind of fish am I after? What kind of things do I need; what should I include in the tackle box? Another great feature about sport fishing is that Zen moment; that in between time when you?re just waiting; anticipating; watching the water and contemplating the whole of nature and how everything comes together so perfectly. Water has this soothing effect on the soul. I don?t understand it, but I like it. So, I think I will ?Go Fishing? as the sign says. But I won?t be in a hammock, and I won?t be snoozing under the trees along the stream. I?ll be trying to catch a fish. Landlocked Salmon Atlantic Salmon are know only in the State of Maine. Some of the other names are Sebago Salmon or Quananiche and the scientific name is Salmo Salar. The average size is 16-18 inches and 1-2 pounds, but 3-5 pound fish are not uncommon. Adults are generally silvery wiyh a slightly forked tail and small x-shaped marking on the back and iper sides. Juvenile salmon have a dark red spot between each pair of parr marks. Mature males develop a kype or hooked jaw, during the spawning season. Landlocked salmon are a freshwater form of the sea run Atlantic Salmon. Prior to 1868, landlocked salmon populations occurred in only four river basins in Maine, St.Croix including West Grand Lake in Washington County, the union, including Green Lake in Hancock County, the Penobscot, including Sebec Lake in Piscataquis, County, and the Presumpscot, including Sebago Lake in Cumberland County. Today, landlocked salmon provide the primary fishery in 176 lakes comprising nearly 500,000 acres. They are present and provide incideatal fisheries in an additional 127 waters comprising about 160,000 acres. Maine supports one of the larges sport fisheries for this species in the world. Landlocked salmon also provide good fisheries in 44 rivers and streams totaling about 290 miles. Hatchery stockings are needed to maintain fisheries in 127 lakes. These lakes do not sufficient amounts of suitable spawning and nursery areas to produce wild salmon. Without regular stockings, salmon in these lakes would disappear entirely, or their numbers would be very, very low. About 123,000 salmon were stocked annually in Maine lakes from 1996 to 2000. Natural reproduction supports salmon fisheries in 49 lakes. These are lakes that have sufficient spawning and nursery habitat to produce enough salmon to support good fisheries. Most of these waters are located in western and northern Maine. Salmon spawn in lake outlets or inlets during the period from mid October to late November. Eggs are buried in gravel from 4-12 inches deep and remain there until hatching early the following spring. Young salmon spend from 1 to 4 years in a stream environment prior to migrating to a lake. Recent studies in Maine show most wild salmon spend 2 years as stream dweelers. In wild salmon populations, most males spawn first at ages 3 and 4, although a few spawn at ages 1 and 2. Females usually spawn first at ages 4 and 5. Spawning runs of wild salmon may be composed of fish ranging in age from 1 to 10 but 3, 4 and 5 year old individuals make up the bulk of most runs. Landlocked salmon may be repeat spawners, but most fish observed on spawning runs are spawning for the first time. Salmon may spawn in consecutive or alternate years, some may spawn in consecutive years then skip a year, and some may skip 2 or 3 years between spawning. Salmon populations sustained by natural reproduction often more older age fish those supported by stocking, wild salmon usually exhibit slower growth do hatchery salmon, so they reach legal size and harvested 1 or 2 years later. The oldest landlocked salmon on record in Maine was years old. Rainbow smelts are the principal forage species for salmon in Maine lakes. Without adequate numbers of smelt, salmon growth and body conition will be poor, markedly reducing value as a sportfish. Maintain adequate numbers of smelt for forage is the most important element of salmon management in Maine. Extensive studies conducted in Maine clearly show that salmon growth rates, and consequently the size of fish available to anglers, is best in lakes with excellent water that do not have large populations of other smelt predators, particularly lake trout. From 1996 to 2000 Maine open water anglers voluntarily released over 60% of their catch of legal salmon, ice anglers released about 25% of their legal salmon catch. Catch and release of salmon has improved fishing in many lakes, but in others it has resulted in depressed smelt populations and smaller salmon, because there are too many salmon. Maine fishery biologists have responded by reducing stocking rates by implementing fishing regulations designed to restore a reasonable balance between numbers of smelts and salmon. Hatchery salmon generally provide fisheries for larger fish than do wild salmon because the number of smelt predators can be strictly controlled. Therefore, precise management for particular types of fisheries, such as those emphasizing trophy fish, is usually best achieved with hatchery stocks rather than wild stocks. From 1996 to 2000, the average size of salmon harvested from all Maine lakes was 17.4 inches and 1.7 pounds, the largest since department fishery biologists began conducting scientific creel surveys in the 1950?s. Have you ever been on the water when the fish just ain't biting? I know I have. Or at least these are the excuses I like to make.
"Ah, the fish just ain't bitin' today."
or
"The water's too muddy, or too clear, or too cold, or... -- well, you get the point.
One thing I have learned is that "The fish ain't biting scenario" may be a good excuse, but, it is just NOT TRUE!
That's right!..... Somewhere in the body of water you are fishing there is some fish
that is willing to bite some lure or bait in your tackle box - no matter the conditions. It took me a long
time to come to grips with this fact.
How did I learn this? Well, on some of my toughest days, when I spend hours on my feet, have 12 rods all rigged with $10 secret lures. When I have a portable depth finder, rod holders, and a 30lb tackle box sitting on the bank, a quarter mile from my car -- there doesn't seem to be a fish in the GALAXY! Then some guy with a $20 fishing pole, a styrofoam cup'o'worms, and a lawn chair walks up, sits down right next to me, and catches a beauty in the first ten minutes. Go figur'.
How can this HAPPEN! Well, that guy just happened to have the right bait, in the right place at the right time. Sounds simple, doesn't it.
Also, how do the pros seem to be able to catch fish in the toughest conditions? Because they have the KNOWLEDGE it takes to catch fish CONSISTENTLY!
That's the key - KNOWLEDGE. I got it from the old timer, Buck Perry. "Knowledge is the key to fishing success."
How did these pros acquire so much knowledge? Well, they did the same thing you are doing! It takes knowledge and PRACTICE to be able to put the right bait, in the right place, at the right time!
Hmmm... Knowledge and practice, practice and knowledge.... sounds familiar doesn't it.

Construction workers have tool belts to hold everything they need while working. Fly fishing anglers have the same thing in the vest. They hold your tools of the fly fishing trade. Without them, you will be endlessly hunting for flies, repellant, grapplers and so on.
This necessary fly fishing clothing comes in a variety of styles. Old school vests are the best in my opinion. They fit and look like regular clothing vests, but are made with mesh pockets and water proofing material. I find they are perfect for holding the necessary fly fishing gear. They are also good because the distribute the weight of your junk...err, gear across your shoulders and back. Any fly fishing gear shop should have them.
Being a consumer society, more than a few companies have come up with advancements in ways to carry around your gear. Typically, they come in the form of modular systems hanging over the shoulder. They look like travel fannypacks hanging off the front of each shoulder. Depending on the brand, they may have a rear or front fanny pack and even both. Some anglers love these more modern gear accessories. Personally, I find them ungainly and annoying, but to each their own. I strongly suggest you fit yourself with one of these new systems before committing to buy them.
When considering how you will hold your stuff, you should give a good bit of thought to what you want it to hold. Personally, I want mine to hold sunscreen for my bald head, insect repellent, clippers, forceps, a poncho for rain, my car keys, line and, of course, flies. I don't like hauling my stuff up and down the shore, so I tend to load up like a Sherpa. You might prefer a less demanding approach. The point is to figure out what is best for you and then buy a version that meets your needs.
If you are going to get serious about angling, you will need to a way to lug your stuff around with you. Figure out what you want to put in yours and then make your selection.

Deep ledge fishing is the spot of choice for anglers who are looking for big king mackerel, muttons, vermillion and lane snappers, larger porgy, mangrove, silk and genuine red snappers. Fishing in the wrecks is ideal to catch big amberjack, smoker kings, grouper and blacktip sharks.
