Fishing Rods - The Weapon Of Choice For All Good Anglers

With more and more great companies producing great fishing rods today, finding the right rod for you could easily be a daunting task to say the least. While you will have to take into account the type of fishing you plan on doing, there are many different rods that you can purchase to do the job. While we all know that ice fishing rods would not be practical for bass fishing on a lake in the spring or fall, so too would the impracticality of using a deep sea rod for a cold February day in an ice hut.

When it comes to fishing rods, the great thing is that you do not have to go to a special store to purchase them. What this means to the consumer is clear savings, when it comes to fishing equipment. There are some great rod/reel combos to be had from the likes of Walmart or virtually any other department store that would sell sporting goods in your area. There are of course the outdoors shops such as Cabela's that specialize in the best of fishing equipment and they have a wide array of fishing rods, and fishing reels to suit just about any particular fishing trip.

Some of the more popular brands to look for when it comes to fishing rods include:

? Mitchell
? Abu Garcia
? Zebco
? Shakespeare
? Shimano

All of these fine fishing rods offer the latest and most productive manufacturing techniques when it comes to development and assembly. These rods are the best of the best and will give you years of great service on the lake of in the streams. When buying a new fishing rod, one of the first things you must keep in mind would have to be what exactly do you plan on catching, or what would be the species that you most likely will be fishing for on a regular basis. When you determine this, you will have a better picture as to what strength and flex you will need in the fishing rods.

Some of the more recent fishing rods released to date offer much in the way of flexibility and strength. When the rod is bent under great force of a fighting fish, the last you want is for the rod to snap and be faced with an expensive replacement of the rod and still not landing that big catch. Take your time and review fishing rods in a comparison chart and see what might be the weapon of your choice to tackle that big catch of the day.

Kip Carey's Official Colorado Fishing Guide, 2nd Edition

Kip Carey's Official Colorado Fishing Guide, 2nd Edition
The book known by many as the "Fisherman's Bible", Kip Carey's Official Colorado Fishing Guide, has been revised and improved for 2003. Besides the new picture of the cutthroat from Rocky Mountain National Park on the cover, changes have been made inside the book as well - additional waters from around the state have been added, updated information on the impact of the drought and fires of 2002, fish species listings have been revised for the entire state of Colorado; trailhead names, trail numbers, road names, and road numbers have been extensively updated; new, concise and more detailed maps have been included; and the last major improvement is an enhanced and expanded index. Kip Carey's Official Colorado Fishing Guide continues to be the most complete and comprehensive angling guide for Colorado available with descriptions for over 3,000 reservoirs, lakes, ponds, creeks, and rivers…in other words the whole state of Colorado is contained in this handy guide.

Angling in Colorado has changed over the last few years as a result of drought, fires, public access, availability of whirling disease free fish, hatchery production, and new policies for stocking native cutthroat in more of Colorado's waters. As a result anglers will find this revised guide invaluable whether fly-fishing, spin-fishing, bank-fishing, boat-fishing, or even hiking and backpacking. The revised 2nd edition keeps with the traditions started by Tim Kelley 48 years ago with the basic format of the book remaining the same and updating done with the assistance from the hard working people from the Colorado Division of Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Park Service, Department of Reclamation, local fishing stores, and everyday anglers from around the state of Colorado.

Tips For Choosing A Location For A Fishing Vacation

If you have the shirt or the bumper sticker that says ?I?d rather be fishing!?, then you have probably taken a fishing vacation recently. I have been on many fishing vacations that just did not turn out as I had planned. Sometimes the vacation did not turn out well because of the lodging, sometimes it was the lack of fish, sometimes it was the amount of people at the location, and sometimes it turned out badly because there was a lack of facilities for my boat. For whatever reason your fishing vacation turns out badly, you are always very disappointed, because it might be a while until you can get away again. Here are some tips for choosing a location for a fishing vacation.

1. Check out the lodging available at your fishing vacation spot. Depending on the trip that you are trying to take, you might want anything from a campground by the lake, or a hotel by the ocean. Whatever type lodging you are looking for, make sure the type of lodging you require is available at the location you choose.

2. Choose a fishing location which produces many fish. No one wants to go on a fishing vacation and not catch any fish. We have all heard of great locations where the fish practically jump into the boat. However, many of these stories are just that, stories. The best tip is to do a little research on your fishing location to see when the fishing is the best. Some locations have good fishing during the spring and some are better during the fall. Make sure that your trip coincides with the best time for catching fish.

3. Choose a location that does not allow water sports. Trust me, this one is a must. You do not want to be battling jet skis, power boats, and wake boarders on your fishing vacation. It is already hard enough to catch some fish when everything is quiet, but it is almost impossible if the water is constantly being stirred up, and the location is very noisy.

4. Make sure your vacation spot has proper boat facilities. If you plan on taking your boat on your fishing vacation, make sure that the location has a marina to leave your boat when you are not fishing. Also make sure that your fishing location has a boat launch, so that you can actually get your boat off the trailer and into the water.

Sport Fishing Travels to Alaska

Many fishermen are discovering the wonderful sport fishing opportunities available in Alaska and are packing their rods and tackle boxes and taking a relaxing vacation to our northernmost state to participate in a growing number of recreational and tournament activities. Alaska is known for its rich hunting and fishing possibilities not only in America but all over the world. More and more travel companies and tour operators are offering Alaska fishing and hunting travels as one of their most lucrative products for business people as well as wealthy private persons or special interested groups overseas. In recent years the popularity of this sport has skyrocketed in the Alaskan region and specialized vacation packages have grown out of the demand.

Fishing tours across Alaska are big business and give the sportsman the opportunity to interact with other enthusiasts who come from around the world. Many operators have day and weeklong tours that will take you to some of the best saltwater fishing available in the world. These packages usually included full lodging and a guarantee that you will catch more than your fair share of fish.

For the true die-hard, many of these tour companies will arrange to have your prize catches sent back to your home on dry ice so that when you do arrive back from your getaway your fish will be waiting for you to show off to your friends and family.

Because of the popularity of this sport you are encouraged to make your reservations at least a year or more in advance. Popular fishing destinations can sell out quickly and it is not unusual to be put on a waiting list that expands out more than a year.

If you want more information on these pre-planned packages contact your local travel agent or get online where you will find many operators have dedicated websites setup that explain to you the adventure that awaits.

G. Loomis Nativerun GLX Single Spey Rods

While not true two-hand rods, these two NativeRun GLX rods give you the option of reaching water you normally can't with a traditional single hander. Crafted with our proprietary GLX graphite, nickel titanium RECOIL guides, our new custom reel seats and the finest Portuguese cork, these rods offer about a foot more of all the best available in a steelhead fly rod. Native Run GLX Series Model Line Weight Power Taper Handle Price FR1327-4-NR-SS NativeRun GLX Single Spey 7 Med-Stiff Med-Fast 162 $685 11feet of pure single hand casting control and pleasure! For anglers interested in a crossover rod between single and two-hand spey rods, you can do it all with this rod. As conditions and back cast space allows, you may overhead cast while wading deep, and get to distances thought reserved for experts only. We suggest using a long belly weight forward intended for single-hand rods for this sort of casting. When backcasting is limited, or if you prefer, using a #5/6 short belly spey line will let you single hand spey cast with ease, providing incredible line control and distance. The combination of a small single haul and the spey casting motion will enable you to cover water you may have thought only possible with 14' rods and longer. FR1328-4-NR-SS NativeRun GLX Single Spey 8 Med-Stiff Med-Fast 162 $695 This is a heavier version of the 11' 7wt. When back cast space is limited, consider using a #6/7 short belly spey line, which allows this rod to shine in its ability to spey cast, and provides enormous mending control. Rod actions can be described as progressive medium fast taper, with a medium stiff rating. As above, the combination of a small single haul and the spey casting motion will enable you to cover water you may have thought only possible with 14' rods and longer, yet you'll be pleasantly surprised what you will feel once you hook up!

Sage ZXL

Introducing the New Sage ZXL Rod Series What happens when cutting-edge Generation 5 (G5) Technology meets the silk-smooth action of our legendary SLT Series? As you might guess, an altogether unheard of level of performance and fishability comes to classic-action fly rods. In other words, our new ZXL Rod Series are significantly lighter, stronger and easier to cast for everyone who enjoys the relaxed casting rhythm of a progressive taper. Through the miracle of our exclusive G5 process, we were able to remove every gram of unnecessary material from each rod blank and replace traditional glass hoop fibers with lighter, more responsive graphite. In fishing terms, this means ZXL rods provide anglers with an incredibly high line feel and response, resulting in intuitively better casting. On the water, ZXL rods are simply dreamy. The smooth, progressive action flexes down to the grip, making incredibly delicate presentations and reminding you to kick back, relax and enjoy. All ZXL rods feature a narrower grip for increased comfort and feedback, slim-line nickel silver and rosewood reel seats, ultra-slender blanks and a deep “pomegranate” color. Ready to experience life on the smooth side? Get your Sage ZXL here and test cast a ZXL and see how much fun it is to relax. • Every Sage rod comes with a lifetime warranty • Rod Case Included • Free Shipping on all Sage Rods Sage on their Rods Some say Sage rods are legendary for their magical properties, their propensity for placing flies just above the ripple. Drag-Free Drift: Leader Design and Presentation Techniques for Fly Fishing

Drag-Free Drift: Leader Design and Presentation Techniques for Fly Fishing
Fly fishermen often pay too little attention to the eight or nine feet of monafilament that connects their hundred dollars of gear to their fly. But this least expensive component the leader is the one most directly connected to fishing success. To fool a trout, a leader must drop a fly lightly on the water and then let it drift naturally, without drag. This groundbreaking work reveals the principles behind leaders that catch fish and provides everything you need to start tying your own, including the ideal proportions of butt, taper, and tippet, the best materials and knots for various applications, and how leaders can be modified and adapted. It also covers techniques of casting to minimize drag and enhance presentation. This most complete work on flyfishing leaders ever published includes LeaderCalc CD with tables for every variation of leader.

Aluminum Fishing Boats: From Compact Jon Boat to Custom Design!

Looking around on the web for an aluminum fishing boat? You'll soon enough find out there are a number of different ways to go, depending on your needs and budget...

Are you looking for something very straightforward and uncomplicated you can quickly fit on your pickup? Or maybe you want something more sophisticated you can use for both tournament fishing and recreational fishing?

Another option - if money isn't your biggest concern - could be to look into a custom built boat with everything just the way you want!

You will probably know why you're looking for an aluminum fishing boat as opposed to a fiberglass or steel boat, but lightness (greater performance or fuel savings) and strength (around 35,000 pounds per square inch (psi) will deform it as opposed to 30,000 psi for mild steel) are probably the greatest advantages.

Price also comes into play as many an aluminum fishing boat owner have reported looking around for similar fiberglass boats and being put off by the prices.

In addition it is not only the purchase price, but also the maintenance costs afterwards which one need to take into account.

Aluminum is practically maintenance-free. If left unpainted aluminum will form a supertight layer of aluminum oxide on its surface and then will stay that way indefinitely.

What else is great about owning an aluminum fishing boat? Aluminum is fireproof and non-toxic; it is natural, and the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. It is easily repairable, and a great advantage for boats: aluminum won't absorb water!

What about price? Well, you can start looking at something that was designed to fit right into small pickup truck beds like a Meyers Explorer 12 Jon Boat. This one goes for only a few hundred dollars!

Then you can move up to something much more advanced like the Tracker Pro Angler V-16. The Tracker features large lockable rod storage that holds up to 7'6" rods, divided aerated livewell with Flow-Rite aeration, a deluxe console with a simulated burlwood switch panel and more.

On the Tracker there's always plenty of room for tackle, people and gear. Even an amateur would know that this was a great aluminum fishing boat after only one ride!

Then there's the Ranger Cherokee 217, which is known for an extremely wide front casting deck. It also features an extension-deck option to make it even bigger. (Note: Unfortunately Ranger stopped making them, but if you can find one, rest assured it's a solid boat. Crestliner's boats can now offer a similar quality in a bass boat).

You may also want to look at unique boats like those of Design Concepts. Their aluminum fishing boats are crafted with a revolutionary hull configuration called Drop-Keel. Instead of being flat on the bottom like other boats, Design Concepts boats are engineered to drop just below the water line before turning upward at the bow. This feature keeps the cutting edge of your boat in the water at all times.

Design Concepts also offer a "true lifetime warranty": even if you sell your boat, the warranty stays with it, ensuring you the highest value retention of any boat you can buy.

How about a custom-built aluminum fishing boat? As an example, King Salmon Marine lets you choose many details like the position of the console, overall length and hight, bottom width and thickness - even the type of aluminum alloy!

9 Tips For Better Bass Fishing

Whether you are on a new lake, or on one that you call home, the main purpose is to locate and catch as many fish as possible. Each body of water has an endless supply of different forms of structure and cover in a variety of depths and water conditions. You can use many types of fishing equipments to be able to get a lot of fish in a proper and legal way, so we need to take good care of our equipments used for catching fish.

Here are some bass fishing equipment tips to be remembered:

* Keeping your feet dry. Seal skin sox, a waterproof pair of shoe that can be worn in any shoe. It will help you a lot in putting your boat in a low lake that calls for a need for you to step in the water too push off, by doing this your feet will be dry all day.

* Keeping your rods good as new. It is nice to look at, especially when you always keep your rod clean. Just use a simple prep pad in cleaning the cork handles on the rod. If the cork of your fishing rods is very untidy then it makes your rods look like hundred years older than it really is. Take a very light grade sand paper and sand the cork handles, you will find out that all the dirt will go away leaving you with a brand new looking fishing rod. Plus it will make your rod last longer.

* Hi- tech basin. Handheld computer and organizers such as the palm pilot can be very helpful to the bass angler. You may be able to log conditions, creating your own checklist to avoid forgetting stuffs, and store the numbers of your new friends you've met along the way. You can also download map for your destinations and when you reach home you can easily access all the information to your home computer for future purposes.

* Being prepared. Always carry equipment and parts in the boat just in case some failures or problems occur.

* Batteries. Always check if you have a good connection. Take care of your battery. Always bring a spare for emergency purposes.

* Being organized. Instead of using a plastic filing box, and some hanging folders why don't you just make an article and label them with general bass angling headings and file your articles as you finish them. Subscribing to a lot of fishing magazines and reading a lot of good articles will be able to help you for your future reference. You can put up a mini library that's all about bass fishing.

* Boat bearings. Many anglers forget to check their wheel bearings on their boat trailers. Every spring when you get your boat out of storage, always have your bearings checked. This could save you from a serious accident with your boat

* Rod basic. The most accurate casting is accomplished when bait casting equipment is cast overhand. Bait casting gear is extremely well suited for "targeted" fishing. On some occasions placing a lure under a boat dock, under over lying limbs or between pontoon boats may be necessary. In this situation skipping a lure is ideal. A spinning outfit is perfect for this chore. Be versatile and be able to use both types of equipment.

* Graphite rods. The biggest killer of graphite rods is impact against a hard object. It may not break in that spot the day it happens but there will be a weak spot at that point. Keep this in mind when stowing rods for travel. If you are keeping them on the deck, strap them flush against the deck so that the parts of the deck aren't rapping against it during travel.

If you are storing them in a locker, do the same or put them in a horizontal holding system, where they won't hit the side or floor of the locker. If you are the non boater and your partner doesn't have room in his locker, try to find the spot that minimizes the repeated bouncing they will take if they are laid over the gunwale. If you have to, lay them over your leg when running the big engine. It's never fun to set the hook on a good fish and end up with a three piece rod

Fly Fishing the Rocky Mountain Backcountry
*8-page color section

* The most complete guide available
* Fishing, camping, and hiking tips
* Extensive list of waters and how to reach them

Great fishing in breathtaking surroundings can be had in the Rocky Mountains, but you'll need this book, because unlike many remote destinations with fly-in access, these waters can only be reached on horseback or on foot. Part One covers gear and techniques for traveling, camping, and fly fishing, including practical advice on how to plan a trip, which hiking, camping, and fishing tackle and flies to bring (and which to leave at home). Part Two is a detailed guide to select destinations in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Oregon, all based on the firsthand experience of the author.

Rich Osthoff is a professional fly tier and angling writer who has fished and hiked in the backcountry for 20-some years and written articles for the major fly-fishing magazines. This is his first book. He lives in Mauston, Wisconsin.

Fishing Boat Rentals

The first series of open fishing boats was developed in 1974. They ranged from 4.8 m (16 ft) to 9 m (30 ft) for use in inshore and coastal fishery. They were initially utilizing the local timber of standard commercial sizes. Planking was done with boards of uniform width to simplify building and reduce wastage. The hull shape was well adapted to economical, low powered engines. In the current scenario, plywood has maintained its role as a material well adapted to use in small-scale boat building.

Most fishermen these days prefer long and slender canoe-shaped boats, as the longer boats reach a higher speed with a small engine than a short, fat boat. A certain beam will be required for a satisfactory stability. However, because of the sharp bow, the longer hulls have very low resistance in waves.

There are a wide variety of fishing boats available. Some of the most popular ones are the all-purpose fishing boats, aluminum fishing boats, bass fishing boats, bay fishing boats, canoes, kayaks and drift fishing boats, catamarans, multihulls (that run with power), center console fishing boats, cuddy cabin fishing boats, deck fishing boats, and diesel motors. Some of the fishing boats that can be used for recreational purposes are fish and ski boats, flats fishing boats, inboard/outboard fishing boats, inboards and I/0, and outboard fishing boats. Luxury fishing boats include outboard motors, pontoon fishing boats, and sport fishing yachts.

Fishing boats can be rented along with the fishing equipment. The fishing captains are usually friendly and are often bilingual. For people who prefer bottom fishing boats, their experienced captains can take them to the best fishing spots for snapper, roosterfish, sea bass, and grouper.

Where To Take Your Fishing Vacation - Some Great Ideas

There are hundreds of locations around the world that are simply excellent locations to enjoy. You will see that many of them are listed here. Others, like the favorite one that you have may not be. There are many unique ways that you too can enjoy the waters the world has to offer.

Consider Manitoba, Canada

The area is known as Land of Lakes that have served to produce many trophy fish. Both still and fly fishing pros love the location. In Manitoba, you'll catch some of the best northern pike and they will give you a good fight too. They strike hard and fast on the Daredevil lure. You can use flies with a good amount of success. You'll also find brook and brown trout, rainbow as well as perch and pickerel. Go in the spring or the fall for the best fishing vacation here.

Good Old Long Island, New York

Here, you'll find Montauk Point. Some of the world's top naturalists have come to the conclusion that this is the place to find the most fish in the world. The point is a glacial cliff and you'll find tuna, cod, mackerel, marlin, striped bass and white shark here. It also features the oldest lighthouse in the states. An inside tip is to cast from the rocks below the lighthouse and you'll get some of the best fishing out there. Although spring and fall are the best times to go, you can come during the summer too.

Wyoming, USA
If you are looking to catch trophy trout in the US, a vacation to Yellowstone National Park is a must. Slough Creek is full of trophy trout, as are other streams within the Park's boundaries, and they are all stocked regularly. Streams and rivers outside of the Park also offer great fishing opportunities, as do the waters of nearby Idaho and Montana. Wyoming is home to 62 native species, including Arctic grayling, burbot, channel catfish, shiners, chub, several trout species, suckers, goldeneye, mountain whitefish, shovelnose sturgeon, and a wide variety of smaller fish.

The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys offer a wide range of fishing opportunities. People come all year round to catch them. In fact, Hemingway himself fished here. The waters are still as excellent as they were then too. You'll find tarpin and bonefish in the Marquesas Islands. You'll find blue marlin, King mackerel, sailfish, yellowfin, shark snapper, and a wide range of others here too.

Head To Hampshire, England

Head just outside of London to get some of the best fly fishing opportunities. Here you'll find trout and Atlantic salmon. Check out the Itchen and Test rivers too although they are on a private island and you'll need to pay to get in, they are excellent opportunities nonetheless. You'll find trout fisheries here, too.

Try Missouri, USA

Go to the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. Here, you can catch bass under the limestone bluffs. You'll find that the river itself has over two hundred different species including bass, channel catfish, sunfish, bullheads, muskellunge, walleye, shad, perch and trout. You'll find more fish here than anywhere in the US.

Here are some tips for you.

Don't take with you all of your equipment unless you really want to. You'll find guide services will provide you with everything that you need.

They can also provide the necessary fishing licenses for you too. Get your information from here too. Make sure if you plan to go out of country that you are allowed to export and import the fish, though.

You can always ask other anglers where they like to fish. Some of the best locations for fishing are in those small, hideouts that are closely guarded secrets!

We're small, but our products are already making more than a few ripples. By rethinking product design from the ground-up, we've created an impressive line up of fly-fishing storage products and accessories that look great, and outperform anything else available on the market. We started with a few simple ideas: design and create a tippet dispenser, develop an innovative cutting tool or clipper, and reshape the fly storage category with the creation of a series of soft-sided cases and chest packs. Our simple ideas turned into very complex design obstacles and challenged some of the best industrial designers in the country, yet we've succeeded with our vision and created a line of revolutionary accessory products that will stand the test of time. Fishpond is all about design and function . We are the first to bring a functional tippet dispenser to the market-one that stores, straightens, cuts and dispenses tippet material directly from most commercially manufactured freshwater tippet spools. Look for our saltwater version in the coming months. Tired of plastic and aluminum fly boxes? We've also created an entirely new product category with our molded nylon and soft-sided fly cases. With ease-of-use in mind, brightly colored jacquard webbing on the spine serves as a hand strap to securely hold the case while on the water. This gives our cases their signature style and unparalleled function. To keep us on the cutting edge, we're redefining the accessory segment with revolutionary products like our patented, ergonomically designed Titanium Clippers with optional integrated retractor that make competitive tools based on the traditional nail clipper obsolete. Our research has told us that fly-fishing enthusiasts want to lighten their load. In response to this trend, fishpond has created two new chest/fanny packs that can complement or replace the traditional fishing vest. Each product has our signature zip-down "fly bench" with a replaceable foam fly page that serves as a convenient fly changing station and work area. At fishpond, we're committed to staying on the leading edge of fly-fishing product design, and we're already hard at work on the next generation of new products to enhance our position as an emerging leader with our dealer-partners and customers. Fishpond is connected to the past and it's timeless traditions, but its focus is on making designs for the fly-fishing enthusiast that will endure the future. We're committed to our dealer-partners and consumers at every level, and want to earn your trust and support by offering quality service, delivery and creativity.
