Deep Sea Fishing In Maine
Deep sea fishing, sometimes referred to as charter fishing, is one of the most exhilarating angling experiences available. The thrill of landing a cod, haddock or even a shark and then hauling it in is second to none, and will have you coming back time and time again. Deep sea fishing has become hugely popular up and down the coast of Maine, with chartered trips running throughout the summer taking everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals for a taste of the action.
What is Deep Sea Fishing?
As the name suggests, deep sea fishing takes place several miles off coast where the waters are much colder and deeper. Chartered trips can go anywhere from a few miles to seventy miles off coast depending on what species they are targeting and the time of year. Particularly good spots for deep sea fishing include ledges and other obstructions on the seabed which are used as current breakers.
There are several methods employed by deep sea fisherman. Commercially and occasionally on chartered trips, nets are used which allow for large hauls of fish to be caught by trawling over large areas. However, most pleasure trips stick to using heavy duty rods and equipment which allows anglers to target particular species and enjoy the thrill of the fight. Few sights are as breathtaking as a strong, beautiful fish leaping from the water in a bid to break free.
What Fish are on Offer?
There are many species of fish on offer to deep sea anglers, with the majority of chartered trips offering the usual cod, haddock, red hake and red fish. Other popular species on offer include pollock, flounder and red fish, and others may be available depending on where you are fishing and the bait and technique used. You are allowed to keep the fish that you catch as long as they are within state guidelines, and many Guides will only be more than happy to fillet your catches for you if you are on a chartered trip.
Shark fishing is also often associated with deep sea fishing and is often combined during chartered trips. Sharks such as the blue are reasonably abundant off the coast of Maine and can be readily caught using the appropriate techniques, with larger sharks such as porbeagles or makos also found occasionally. These are much larger though, and will require specialist equipment to land successfully.
How Can I Get Started?
If you are lucky enough to own your own boat, then the appropriate licenses and equipment will allow you to head out to sea as and when you wish. However, the majority of deep sea fishing takes place in groups aboard chartered trips led by Captains and Registered Maine Guides. The major advantage of these group trips is that all equipment and necessary licenses are provided for you on the day. Additionally, the cost of these trips is very reasonable, particularly if you go as part of a larger group. No previous fishing experience is required as the Guides will be more than happy to show you the ropes and get you on your way to catching your first big fish.

The term ultra light fishing may conjure up pictures of a fishing rod and reel that would compare with the snoopy setup that you have for your kids. I'm here to dispute that argument once and for all. Ultra Light fishing simply means using fishing gear that's smaller than you may be accustomed to. Actually, it's using equipment that's actually matched to what you're fishing for.
Lets take fishing line as an example. When is the last time a fish actually broke your line? That is, you reeled in your line after having a fish on and the line was broken from the fight of the fish. Obviously I'm not referring to the line braking from abrasion. I'm referring to the line breaking from the weight of the fish. I've been fishing twenty years, and ultralight fishing for eighteen of those years. I can count on one hand the number of times a fish has broken my line, without the help of abrasive surfaces. Yet many people use fishing line that's double the weight of the fish they are attempting to catch. Do you realize that four pound test fishing line will withstand four pounds of weight without breaking? Yet very few people use fishing line as light as four pound test. They consider four pound test to be ultralight.
For the most part, your fishing line should match the size of your fishing rod and reel. My point is that if you use a medium action rod and reel, spooled with six pound test monofilament, and you're fishing for nice walleye and smallmouth bass, this setup could be considered ultra light. And this is not at all a bad thing. In fact, it's a good thing. Using a rod, reel, and line that match each other will result is you getting more bites and catching more fish. Not only will it result in you catching more fish, but it adds to the sporty as well. Catching a four pound smallmouth on the setup mentioned above is much more fun than catching the same smallmouth on a rod a reel setup that's heavier (and most anglers use) isn't nearly as much fun. I speak from experience on that one.
I'll give you a real life example of how line diameter specifically relates to our subject. I was out fishing a couple of years ago with gang hooks tied on six pound test monofilament. I used heavier line because I thought I had a big fish located. In any case I fished for three hours without a bite. This was highly unusual for the area I fish in Montana, but I figured that the moon or weather must have had something to do with it. I was about to call it a day, when I got snagged and lost my last pre tied gang hook. As I was walking away, I remembered that I normally use gang hooks tied on four pound test monofilament. I of course had spare line and hooks with me, so I quickly tied a gang hook on four pound test, baited it with a worm (just as I had been all day), and cast out my line. Half way through my drift, FISH ON. I fished for another thirty minutes and caught four more nice trout. The only difference was the size of the line that my gang hooks were tied on, that was it.
The bottom line is that ultralight fishing isn't necessarily what you may be thinking. If you've never matched your fishing gear to what you're fishing for, give it a shot. You won't be disappointed. And never forget what Don Marquis said about fishing, "Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in old clothes."

Fishing Rod Casting
The action of a fishing rod is the behavior of the rod while being cast by an individual. The action of the rod may be the same for all the people who cast with it and it may be different for every person who casts with it. Very few casters cast exactly alike. Their hand, arm, muscular and nervous systems are never exactly alike and they con?sequently perform a cast with a rod differently than any other hand and arm, etc. The action of most rods will react substantially the same for all casters, however. When a rod does not react the same for one caster as another, the action of the rod for each caster is different. That is, a rod may be called a stiff action by one caster and a med?ium stiff action by another, and both are correct. The action of a rod, then, depends directly on the particular caster using it and may vary from caster to caster.
We will discuss rod action as it applies to fly rods, only. The rod actions are only discussed in general terms.
Wet Fly Fishing Rod Casting
WEJT FLY ACTION: Years ago, a ?wet fly action? fly rod was considered to be a rod that was very limber and which bent freely from the grip to the tip. The theory of such limber, soft rods was that they allowed the flies to fall gently into the water and the line to fall straight into the water. Either claim has questionable advantages under many conditions. Gradually, as the years have gone by, fisher?men began to find out that these old ?buggy whip wet fly rods? were actually poor rods for casting the wet fly and that rods suitable for dry fly casting generally cast wet flies much more satisfactorily. Act?ually, wet fly rods are non-existent today except when a maker turns out a poor dry fly rod and sells it to some novice as a ?wet fly rod.?
Dry Fly Fishing Rod Casting
DRY FLY ACTION: There are many ways to build a dry fly rod or dry fly action into a rod. Most of these methods produce good dry fly rods. I will briefly describe some of the better known methods of producing dry fly action in a rod.
HEWITT DRY FLY ACTION: Edward H. Hewitt, as you un?doubtedly know, was considered the best fly fisherman for trout in the world. There are those who are prone to minimize Hewitt?s abil?ities for personal reasons or self glory. However, I have never known or heard of anyone from reliable sources who could beat Hewitt for actually putting trout in a creel. Hewitt used a rod with action or the bending in the lower or middle part but not as pronounced as in the standard Dry Fly action. On a three piece rod, for example, the upper half of the middle section and the lower half of the tip have ?level tapers?, that is, the tapers are slight. This leaves these areas a little stiff. Such a rod has action all over but slightly more of the bending is in the butt section, the lower half of the middle section, and the top half of the tip.
Hewitt action is identical to the Standard Dry Fly action describ?ed below, except that the variations in the ?level tapered? areas are less from a straight taper than the Standard Dry Fly action ?level tapers.?
In one of the last letters from Hewitt, he wrote me that he much preferred this type of rod to all others and that he never was able to wear one out or soften up the action of such a rod no matter how long he use it. This means something coming from Hewitt. He not only had used rods of various types for a great many years but used them a great deal ever year. As always, Hewitt had Leonard make his rods and he always had the highest praised for them.
