Maine Fishing Landlocked Atlantic Salomon

Landlocked Salmon Atlantic Salmon are know only in the State of Maine. Some of the other names are Sebago Salmon or Quananiche and the scientific name is Salmo Salar. The average size is 16-18 inches and 1-2 pounds, but 3-5 pound fish are not uncommon. Adults are generally silvery wiyh a slightly forked tail and small x-shaped marking on the back and iper sides. Juvenile salmon have a dark red spot between each pair of parr marks. Mature males develop a kype or hooked jaw, during the spawning season.

Landlocked salmon are a freshwater form of the sea run Atlantic Salmon. Prior to 1868, landlocked salmon populations occurred in only four river basins in Maine, St.Croix including West Grand Lake in Washington County, the union, including Green Lake in Hancock County, the Penobscot, including Sebec Lake in Piscataquis, County, and the Presumpscot, including Sebago Lake in Cumberland County.

Today, landlocked salmon provide the primary fishery in 176 lakes comprising nearly 500,000 acres. They are present and provide incideatal fisheries in an additional 127 waters comprising about 160,000 acres. Maine supports one of the larges sport fisheries for this species in the world. Landlocked salmon also provide good fisheries in 44 rivers and streams totaling about 290 miles.

Hatchery stockings are needed to maintain fisheries in 127 lakes. These lakes do not sufficient amounts of suitable spawning and nursery areas to produce wild salmon. Without regular stockings, salmon in these lakes would disappear entirely, or their numbers would be very, very low. About 123,000 salmon were stocked annually in Maine lakes from 1996 to 2000.

Natural reproduction supports salmon fisheries in 49 lakes. These are lakes that have sufficient spawning and nursery habitat to produce enough salmon to support good fisheries. Most of these waters are located in western and northern Maine. Salmon spawn in lake outlets or inlets during the period from mid October to late November. Eggs are buried in gravel from 4-12 inches deep and remain there until hatching early the following spring.

Young salmon spend from 1 to 4 years in a stream environment prior to migrating to a lake. Recent studies in Maine show most wild salmon spend 2 years as stream dweelers. In wild salmon populations, most males spawn first at ages 3 and 4, although a few spawn at ages 1 and 2. Females usually spawn first at ages 4 and 5. Spawning runs of wild salmon may be composed of fish ranging in age from 1 to 10 but 3, 4 and 5 year old individuals make up the bulk of most runs. Landlocked salmon may be repeat spawners, but most fish observed on spawning runs are spawning for the first time. Salmon may spawn in consecutive or alternate years, some may spawn in consecutive years then skip a year, and some may skip 2 or 3 years between spawning.

Salmon populations sustained by natural reproduction often more older age fish those supported by stocking, wild salmon usually exhibit slower growth do hatchery salmon, so they reach legal size and harvested 1 or 2 years later. The oldest landlocked salmon on record in Maine was years old.

Rainbow smelts are the principal forage species for salmon in Maine lakes. Without adequate numbers of smelt, salmon growth and body conition will be poor, markedly reducing value as a sportfish. Maintain adequate numbers of smelt for forage is the most important element of salmon management in Maine. Extensive studies conducted in Maine clearly show that salmon growth rates, and consequently the size of fish available to anglers, is best in lakes with excellent water that do not have large populations of other smelt predators, particularly lake trout.

From 1996 to 2000 Maine open water anglers voluntarily released over 60% of their catch of legal salmon, ice anglers released about 25% of their legal salmon catch. Catch and release of salmon has improved fishing in many lakes, but in others it has resulted in depressed smelt populations and smaller salmon, because there are too many salmon. Maine fishery biologists have responded by reducing stocking rates by implementing fishing regulations designed to restore a reasonable balance between numbers of smelts and salmon.

Hatchery salmon generally provide fisheries for larger fish than do wild salmon because the number of smelt predators can be strictly controlled. Therefore, precise management for particular types of fisheries, such as those emphasizing trophy fish, is usually best achieved with hatchery stocks rather than wild stocks.

From 1996 to 2000, the average size of salmon harvested from all Maine lakes was 17.4 inches and 1.7 pounds, the largest since department fishery biologists began conducting scientific creel surveys in the 1950?s.

Having The Proper Fishing Pole and Supplies

To the inexperienced eye, a fishing pole, is a fishing pole, is a fishing pole! But to the experienced fisherman a pole is the 1st item in the list of things you must get right to
catch a fish. There are heavy duty salt water poles that are made for catching something huge out of the ocean. And if salt water fishing is what you have in mind then the
monster pole is exactly what you need. A person might think that the salt water pole is the way to go with all types of fishing. The bigger the pole the bigger the fish, type
thinking. But as heavy as those salt water poles are, it takes a big fish to even know you have something on your fishing line. Also the boats you go out on to fish the sea
have pole holders to help you hold and control your pole. Those poles are too heavy and awkward to use for fresh water fishing. Fishing in any of the fresh water rivers,
lakes, or beaver ponds you can go with a lighter fishing rod. In most stores you find poles marked medium, light, and extra light. The lighter the pole, the smaller the fish you
will feel on the end of the rod. That's called the action of a pole. Now that means feel the fish bite the bait, not the size of fish the pole can catch. But if you go too light you run
the risk of breaking your pole when trying to bring in a fish.

If you do go with a lighter pole ( an extra light is my favorite due to its action ) you can beef it up a bit by going with
fishing line heavy enough to handle the size of fish your expecting to catch. I fish beaver ponds and mountain lakes mostly that's why an extra light works for me. If your fishing
in the south for a big 'ol catfish then you will do better with a medium action pole. Then there is also a fly pole which can be used in fresh water fishing except for trolling or
fishing for something like catfish ( they're bottom feeders, you use a fly pole for on top of the water feeders like rainbow trout ). Once you figure out where you want to fish and
pick the pole best for you, then you decide on the weight of the fishing line. From this point on your supplies that you need depend on where your going to fish and the
enviromental conditions. I recommend trying to put together a well stocked tackle box that cover the needs for several types of fishing and different conditions.

You will need
extra fishing line, hooks of different sizes, sinkers, bobbers, an assortment of flies, salmon eggs, and other bait. A small but sharp knife, a pair of scissors, a stringer to put
the fish you catch on, and a fish scale. For the Rookie I would recommend a beginners book to explain some of the basics about light, water clarity and some of the other
things. Another thing I always do when preparing to fish in a new area, is to talk to the natives. Ask the gal at the counter of the fishing tackle store what the fish are biting on
and where are the hot spots. With time and practice you will develop your own technique and figure out which pole, line, and bait work best for you. There is only one thing
left....Don't forget to buy a fishing license! Oh and have FUN!!

This concert, titled My Best Day, features Ezra Idlet on guitar and Keith Grimwood on bass and was taped at the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall on the University of Central Arkansas campus. The duo performs songs from their two Grammy-nominated albums, as well as some new songs, before an enthusiastic audience that becomes a part of the show. Accompanying TFIA is multi-instrumentalist Fred Bogert on guitar, piano, accordion and more.

Idlet and Grimwood will be live in the AETN studios for this special evening of program. Fishing has been a part of our survival for as long as recorded history and probably much longer. Ancient cave paintings from 10,000 years ago depict fishing along with fish bone remains and animal bone hooks. Even ancient stone anchors are currently being displayed in museums.

Everywhere on this planet, what ever culture, each has its own history in fishing and techniques, most of which are still used today. In fact, almost all ancient cultures have used boats, hooks, nets and spears of some kind.

The ancient Romans used rods and lines, nets and spears. The ancient Greeks used rods and woven baskets and woven cages that stay under water where caught fish are kept alive until they are needed.

Some cultures have been more creative than others and have very interesting techniques such as the night fishing in Japan. It is called cormorant fishing. It requires 7 to 8 cormorant birds that have handlers to train them. Once trained, they go out at night on a long narrow boat that has a long rod in front of it with a hanging basket that is in flames, the birds are each on a leash and are trained to dive down and catch fish, which they are experts in. This technique is still being practiced today and if you are for any reason going to Japan, you may want to sign up to see this phenomenon.

In the Columbian basin, ancient tribal salmon fishers have past down a fishing technique that is still being practiced today. Tribal families for many generations have built wooden scaffolding that is very strong and stable that spans the river. This enables them to drop the nets that capture many salmon at one time. In the smaller rivers of the basin, dip nets are used because you can control them better. These nets historically have been made with hemp twine, sinew and tree pitch. These nets have a long pole attached to them and one stands in the water and scoops up the fish.

In medieval Europe, V shaped structures were built to herd fish into waiting nets.

Some cultures have used poisonous plants to stun fish so that it is easy to catch them. This is a dangerous practice and has been made illegal to fish this way due to the obvious safety issues. One does not want to risk eating a fish that has been poisoned.

Fishing today is not only for survival but is a huge sport all over the world. But when you really look at it, not much has really changed in how we fish. The major difference really is in the advancements made in hooks and nets.

How ever you fish, may the ones you catch be as big as the ones that got away.

Without Market Research You Could Find Yourself Fishing In An Empty Pond

I've never been much of a fisherman. Sitting in a small boat for hours watching a red and white bobber float atop the water holds about as much interest for me as watching paint dry. My old man, on the other hand, would have rather fished than breathe. In fact, his favorite Bible quote was: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he'll sit in the boat and drink beer with you for life." Needless to say, my old man wasn't much of a Bible scholar, but he was one heck of a fisherman.

The few times that I went fishing with him as a young boy (before I was old enough to know better) he'd bait my hook with a worm he'd dug up from our garden and drop it in the water and tell me to watch the bobber until a fish pulled it under the surface. The moment I saw the bobber go under I was to jerk the line and reel the fish in. I can remember staring at that bobber until my eyes crossed and never, not once, did it ever go under the surface. I am probably the only male child ever born in the great state of Alabama who never caught a single fish. It is but one of the disappointments my ancestors have endured on my account, I assure you.

My old man's bobber, on the other hand, would be jerked under the water within minutes of being tossed in. He'd be catching fish left and right and I'd be sitting there like some angler savant just staring at my bobber and wishing I was old enough to cuss out loud.

I discovered a few years later that the reason he caught all the fish was that he baited his hook with live worms while hanging the dead ones on mine. His worm would wiggle seductively to attract every fish within a two mile radius while mine couldn't even get the attention of a starving turtle if it had swam directly into my hook.

I'm sure I suffered some permanent psychological damage as a result of his actions, but we all have our scars to bear. Mine just happens to be in the shape of a hook with a dead worm hanging from it. The memory has been filed away deep in my psyche in a drawer labeled, "Gee, thanks dad." It's a drawer I'm sure we all have, mine is probably just a little fuller than most.

While he could have used a few lessons on child rearing, the old man was an expert in one thing that we entrepreneurs often botch or ignore and that is market research. He didn't call it that, of course. He said, "Son, never fish in a dry hole." Let me translate that tidbit of Forrest Gump advice: don't try to sell a product in a market where there are no buyers. If there are no buyers, there is no market. You can have the greatest product in the world, but if there is no market for your product you might as well pack it up and go dig worms.

Over the years he had surveyed every inch of that lake and as a result knew his market well. Through much research he knew exactly where the best customers, i.e. the hungry fish, were in the lake. And that's where he anchored his boat; smack dab in the middle of his own starving niche market.

Having found his hungry market he tested products to sell into it. He tried crickets, dough balls, lures, worms, and who knows what else, to determine the kind of bait the fish liked best. In the internet marketing business we call it split testing: offering customers variations of a theme to see which one brings the greatest response. In his case worms were the product that his market liked best.

He also knew his customers well. He knew that if they liked the product they'd be quick to bite. He knew without flinching exactly how to react when they nibbled the bait. He didn't jerk the line because he knew that might let his customer get away. He tugged it gently until he had his fish hooked, then he'd reel them in and close the deal.

And being the consummate fisherman cum entrepreneur he always took his best customers to dinner, literally. What the old man knew was that in fishing, as in business, you succeed by giving customers (be they human or be they fish) what THEY are hungry for, what THEY want or need; not by trying to catch them with the bait or sell them products YOU think they should have.

Sometimes we entrepreneurs think we're smarter than our customers (OK, sometimes we are). We think that they will buy whatever we put in front of them if we just do a really good job of selling it. I've actually heard some arrogant entrepreneurs say just that, "They'll buy what I have to sell or they can take their business elsewhere." That line of thinking guarantees that you will spend most of your time watching bobbers that never get pulled under.

It's when we take our customer's wants and needs for granted that we fail as entrepreneurs and our lines sit in the water undisturbed. The problem often comes when entrepreneurs put the cart before the horse. They will create a product or service for which there is no market. They fail to survey the pond for hungry fish. Instead they grab the bait they think will work and off they go. Usually they come back empty handed. It happens to entrepreneurs and fishermen all the time.

What can you do to help ensure that the pond you're considering is full of hungry fish? That's a topic we'll discuss next time. Keep watching that bobber now, you hear.

Trout Fishing Tips - In Search of the Trophy Trout

Have you ever dreamed of landing that big trout? Fishing for trout of any size is great fun, but I'm talking about those ten to twelve pounders, or even larger. You can do it, but first you have to find them.

Unless you live in the remote back country of the west, or some place where you have access to areas that have not had a lot of fishing pressure, then you have been limited to that kind of trout fishing, and like most of us, have settled for catching and releasing countless ten inch stock trout. Today we have to search out those places where the big fish can be found. Keep in mind almost all waters have a few good fish, the trick is how to catch them. If you fish the streams most of the time and have access to say three miles of stream, start your fishing a half mile or so from camp. You will be way ahead of most of the other fishermen in camp. Be sure to get out early as the best fishing will be right after day light. One other thing, very important, is to have a good selection of trout lures with you and maybe a few night crawlers. The fish, most times, will be just off the current, feeding. Try casting up stream above any eddy's or any rocks that might be exposed. Keep all slack out of the line and make sure your bait is getting down in the water. The bigger trout will be around cover of some kind. Continue fishing up stream, check and fish all pools and cut backs in the bank. Make sure after the sun is up your shadow does not show on the water. Don't forget to change lures after a while if you are not having any luck. A different bait in the same pool might get results. You might catch trout any time of day, although I have found, depending on the pressure, the best fishing is in the first three hours in the morning and the last two hours before sunset. Sometimes, again depending on the pressure, around three in the afternoon can be productive. These fish are likely ones that did not compete well in the early morning hours for any viable food. The farther you get up stream away from the crowd the better your chances are of catching bigger trout. If the water is high and a little fast you might want heavier trout lures, and if the water is a little murky you might try using a spinner bait that will be easier for the fish to see. Remember, they won't strike if they can't see the lure. Some times all it takes is the flash of the spinner to get a trout to strike and you never know it just might be that monster trout you have been dreaming about.

No matter what, you won't catch anything if you don't get out there and get your trout lures wet.

Nevertheless, the sentiment seems to best express my feelings about billfish and their importance in the grand scheme of things. I ran across another quote that speaks volumes, and it goes like this - "A release today, is a fish tomorrow!" Yep, this guy is speaking my language. I wonder how many others feel the same way? To my surprise, a whole lot more than I anticipated and they're doing a whole lot more than just talking about it.

The World Championship Billfish Release Tournament makes its debut in beautiful and billfish-bountiful Cabo San Lucas in May. Sure, there are plenty of other tournaments held here at the tip of the Baja peninsula, but this one takes conservation-minded protocols to a new and higher level. First, the mandatory use of circle hooks with either live or dead bait. Second, single hooks only, whether J or circle, on all artificial baits. Third, a tagging program which will assist The Billfish Foundation and others in the continuing research of billfish species and successful conservation methods. There is a long list of worthy endeavors undertaken by the tournament and those associated with it including direct benefits to the local community. Most important being support of the Nino's del Capitan, an orphanage dedicated to making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children in Los Cabos.

Add a one-of-a-kind Billfish Tag Challenge to the mix and you have the makings of a socially and ecologically conscious tournament with a twist. The organizers have added a single tagged marlin - to be tagged and released three days prior to the start of fishing - that if caught will bring the lucky team or angler a $1,000,000.00 (USD) payout. Mexico has never seen anything like this in a fishing tournament, conservation-minded or not, and the thought of landing the "million dollar marlin" is sending a buzz through the ranks of big game sport fishermen around the globe.

The group that put this event together sports some impressive credentials and brings a world of knowledge and experience to the table. The reasons why they chose to become involved follow along the same path, a path that leads to a reversal in the decline of billfish populations. Amongst the committee members is Dr. Russ Nelson, marine scientist and Director of International Conservation Programs for The Billfish Foundation (http://billfish.org.com). When asked why he decided to support the tournament and provide his expertise, Dr. Nelson responded with the following. "Personally I have two motivations here. As a lifelong angler I am absolutely devoted to the joy of pursuing these great animals and hope my daughters and their children have the opportunity to do the same. As a marine scientist I recognize the importance of billfish - sailfish, marlins, swordfish - as the apex predators of the marine pelagic ecosystem - predators whose presence preserves a natural balance of other fish species in the system. Threats to these billfish predators represent real threats to the stability and function of the entire system." Dr. Nelson also added, "I think the time is right for Cabo (the town that marlin built) to move forward with a high profile all-release tournament. Cabo and Baja California Sur have made great progress in billfish and marine fisheries conservation over the last few years and now we want to showcase this conservation ethic to the whole billfishing world."

Wayne Harmond, one of the WCBRT's tournament directors said, "I chose to get involved with this group out of respect for them and as a chance to show others that tournament billfishing can have a conservation message and a social conscience and still be a great, fun experience. Indiscriminant drift net fishing and long lining have severely impacted the oceans creatures (not the least of which are the billfish populations). When you add the still popular tradition of sports harvesting of billfish, its clear that we have to show some personal responsibility if we're to change these practices. Baja, Mexico is a perfect example of a world-class billfishery that is in danger of losing one its greatest natural resources. I want to show that we can be good stewards of the oceans without compromising the pleasure and enjoyment of sport fishing."

It's important to point out that the WCBRT is also going to donate proceeds to local charities as well - the "Ninos del Capitan" and the FCP (Fundacion Para la Conservacion de Los Picudos, A.C.) or Mexican Billfish Foundation. The FCP has worked hard in Los Cabos, alongside other like-minded groups, to develop the first trust in Mexico that sets aside fishing license sales revenues in our state to billfish conservation." Bass Fishing At Night - An Effective Way To Fish

The classic image of bass fishing is lazing in a rowboat in the middle of a lake on a sunny afternoon. However, some smart bass enthusiasts have discovered that the best way to get great bass during the summertime months is by fishing in the dead of night. There are a lot of reasons why night fishing for bass is a great idea, so if you haven?t tried evening fishing yet, give it a shot and be prepared to reel in some winners. Summer is the most popular season for fishing, which has both positive and negative aspects for sportsmen. Because bait and equipment are in so much demand during the warmer months of the year, these goods are plentiful and easy to find as retailers stock up in order to get the best bait and tackle to their customers. However, as fishing fans flock to lakes and streams all over the country, all too often the peace and quiet of the sport becomes quite elusive as multiple sportsmen jockey for position on the same water. The summertime crowds can take away a lot of the fun of bass fishing. If you choose to fish at odd times of the night, it is likely that you will never run into the problem of overcrowding. Because only a small percentage of bass fishermen hit the water in the dark, you should have no trouble finding a pond or a lake offering plenty of solitude and a supply of fish that is all yours for the taking.



Another reason why bass fishing at night during the summer can prove to be a kind of fisherman?s jackpot has to do with the habits of the bass themselves. Bass prefer to stay cool, so they tend to head for the deepest waters that they can find during the intense heat of midday and afternoon. The deeper down in the pond the fish are lurking, the more difficult they are to catch and reel in. This can lead to fruitless afternoons of sitting in the sweltering heat and catching very little bass. However, during the cool nighttime hours, the bass come much more readily into shallow waters. This means that they are easier for sportsmen to find and to catch.



Although nighttime bass fishing can be much more rewarding than trying to snag these elusive creatures during the day, there are some disadvantages to night fishing. One problem that many sportsmen are surprised by during late night expeditions is insects. Be sure to pack some bug repellent to help you emerge from your night on the water without falling prey to mosquitoes and other warm weather pests. Another issue to consider is safety. Spending time in a boat when visibility is low because of the lack of light can be more dangerous than boating during the daytime, so make sure to take all of the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your fishing companions.
