Fishing Lures - Small Things Make Big Differences in Angling

When you think of fishing, there is perhaps no piece of equipment more recognized than fishing lures. There are countless thousands of lures on the market, and there is something for just about every species of fish to mistake for a good meal. Fishing lures today come in just about every conceivable color and shape, from bright neon minnows, to larger rubber frogs and crawfish. Finding the right lures for the days on the lake sometimes can be tricky, as during different seasons a lake fish such as a bass or trout change their diet to accommodate the various temperatures and water conditions.

While many people enjoy using a good old worm to land a fish on the docks every now and again, it is the lures that tend to offer the best strikes from the larger fish. Species such as bass, pike, and walleye tend to go after larger quick moving bait, when it comes to mealtime. This is not to say that a larger predatory fish will not enjoy a worm every once and a while, it just means that lures are more apt to look like what they are accustomed to hunting in regards to prey.

When it comes to lures there are a great number of benefits when fishing, allowing the angler many options when it comes to choice being the most obvious. There are however some disadvantages as well when it comes to lures. Easily the biggest disadvantage that lures possess, would have to be the snag factor. Sometimes when casting lures in tight areas that may include weeds or water logged driftwood, fishing lures may become snagged and unable to release. There are good possibilities at this point that you can loose that prized lure, as you will be unable to get it free from the object. This could easily become a rather costly day on the lake, should you loose 3-5 lures while trying to get your cast in tight where a school may be in staging.

Sometimes a smart fish may not go after even some of the best fishing lures, as it still may be skeptical of the lures movements and deem it non-edible. Matching the right fishing lures with the right species and season, can make all the difference in the world when it comes to being successful on the lake. Trying to catch a small lake trout with lures that are primarily designed for large mouth bass, will only show you just how smart a fish can really be. For this very reason lures are designed around the breed themselves, and are diligently worked on to improve their success rate when used. Perhaps one of the best ways to ensure some level of success with lures, would be to do some research on the species themselves.

By studying their natural habitat, their feeding preferences, and there behaviors, you will be able to get a better understanding of this particular breeds traits. From this point you will be more suited to make an educated guess on which fishing lures will work best for what you are after.

    Fly Fishing Trips for Women

Fly fishing has been considered a mostly male pastime since its inception, but now many women are beginning to turn to this sport for fun, relaxation, and even competition. Many female competitors participate at or above the level of their male peers.

During the years, many men were unsupportive towards women wanting to fish because of the general mentality that women were supposed to stay in the homes, but as time passed more women began fly fishing and several organizations for women were created. Special women fly-fishing classes were created and several guides that only served women appeared. Nowadays, several locations and companies provide women fly fishing trips. They teach women all the techniques necessary to be a successful fly fisher. Women are taught how to handle the rod and move it so that fish will be tempted, how to wheel in the fish once they are caught, what to wear for protection, and general tips for successfully luring and catching fish.

Over the years, many fly fishing competitions appeared that were only open to women, and others in which men and women competed alongside each other in an equal contest. Fly Fishing is no longer only a men's sport, as women from all over the world and all cultures are starting to practice it. Women from all different age groups and backgrounds enjoy the sport. The fly-fishing industry welcomes these women and provides everything possible so that they will continue participating in the sport. Participating in a woman fly-fishing trip is a good way to learn the basics of the sport and get a good idea of the techniques and skills necessary to catching fish.

Fly Fishing for Trout - Casting or Hunting

Fly casting is a skill that most fly fishermen would probably consider the most integral skill of fly fishing for trout. Certainly it is the most recognizable trait of fly fishing.

BUT, if catching fish is as important to you as a great looking cast is, then you may actually need to be careful just how much casting you do.

Fly fishing has far more in common with hunting than it does with other forms of fishing. This is because trout are such a timid creature and are so easily spooked. Although it is not such an issue if you are fishing deep in large bodies of water or in wide, fast flowing streams, it is still for this reason that casting can also be your worst enemy when trout fishing.

The classical 'Long cast', although a beautiful thing to behold, and even more beautiful to perform, does have it's limitations. It was designed to deliver a lure to a timid quarry, who would be spooked by splashing sinkers or floats or any of the traditional fishing equipment and tackle generally used for other, less discerning species. The whole concept of doing this with a whip-like rod and line was indeed an ingenious one.

Trout, and particularly Brown Trout, see everything. And the bigger the trout, the more they see. The fly fisherman standing plain view false casting is an obvious predatory threat and will cause a fish to disappear into the depths, without you even knowing the trout was ever there.

To catch good, wild trout in smallish or still waters you must become an ambush predator and learn to think like a hunter. This, the element of surprise, is one of your greatest skills when fly fishing for trout. Believe it or not, even above good casting skills.

Dressing to be reasonably well camouflaged, keeping low and not making any fast or large movements, all play a role in not alerting a potential target trout to your presence. Even making sure you don't step heavily on the ground as you approach the fishing spot, keeps your footsteps from resonating through the water. Sound travels very well under water, particularly for a creature who has receptacles designed to hear within an aquatic environment.

Without a doubt, you will have to cast, and the better practised you are at casting with a fly rod, the less movement you must make to get your fly into the position you want it. So there is a good argument for spending time casting, just for casting sake. This is best done in an open place, preferably over water if you have the luxury, like a dam or lake, but anywhere that you are not going to catch any unwanted items will do to improve your skills.

If you want to be successful, don't just trudge up to the waters edge and start casting out into the middle of the lake or stream. The bulk of the aquatic life that the trout source as their food items are usually located towards the edges of the water, and near to the aquatic plant life also.

With this in mind, the trout will more likely be keeping as far out of reach of their own predators as possible, while maintaining a presence (cruising in still waters, on station in faster waters) close to their preferred food source. Larger fish preferring deeper water for security, and structures or irregularities for potential dietary supplies.

Most of the matter here is relevant to fishing pole. This was the main intention of writing on fishing pole, to propagate its value and meaning.

    Fly Fishing

Ancient Macedonian pottery paintings indicate that fly fishing, that is, fishing with

a lure constructed of feathers to imitate an insect, was the first form of angling

with a rod. Fly fishing differs from most other disciplines of fishing today because

the fly must be cast on a fly rod, a very whippy, limber pole which is bent or

"loaded" by a fly line. Whereas a bait fisherman uses the weight of his lure or bait

to pull line out behind it when thrown, a fly fisher uses the weight of the line

itself to bend and unbend his rod.

    Hand fishing

It is possible to fish with minimal equipment by using only the hands. In the USA

catching catfish in this way is known as noodling. In the British Isles, the practice

of catching trout by hand is known as trout tickling.

    Spear and bow fishing

Spear fishing is an ancient method of fishing and may be conducted with an ordinary

spear or a specialised variant such as an eel spear or the trident. A small

trident type spear with a long handle is used in the American South and Midwest for

"gigging" bullfrogs with a bright light at night, or for gigging carp and other trash

    fish in the shallows.

    Fishing nets

All fishing nets are meshes usually formed by knotting a relatively thin thread.

Modern nets are usually made of artificial polyamides like nylon, although nets of

organic polyamides such as wool or silk thread were common until recently and are

    still used in certain areas.

    Fishing lines

Fish are caught with a fishing line by encouraging a fish to bite upon a fish hook or

a gorge. A fishing hook will pierce the mouthparts of a fish and may be barbed to

make escape less likely. A gorge is buried in the bait such that it would be

swallowed end first. The tightening of the line would fix it cross-wise in the

quarry's stomach or gullet and so the capture would be assured.

    Ice fishing

Ice fishing is the practice of catching fish with lines and hooks through an opening

in the ice on a frozen body of water. It is practised by hunter-gatherers such as the

Inuit and by sportsmen in many cold climates.

What ever technique is you favorit, one thing is for certain; fishing is a

fantastic recreational hobby or sport. A growing number of people around the world is

joining the fellowship of fishermen. More and more people are finding out about the

relaxing effect fishing has. One could wonder why it is so. Maybee because the world

surrounding us all is going faster and faster, and we need a breathing hole ones and

a while to catch our breath. Fishing provides that hole! A lot of us has known it for

years, some has just discovered it, and others will join in the future.

Fast and Able: Life Stories of Great Gloucester Fishing Vessels
As a boy, Gordon W. Thomas climbed the rigging of schooners tied up at Gloucester wharves and gazed over the masts out to sea, where he yearned to go. But his father, Capt. Jeffrey Thomas, skipper of the Adventure, would not let him go to sea. The sea was too dangerous, he said. There were enough Thomases at sea.

So Gordon Thomas stayed onshore and became a walking encyclopedia of Gloucester schooners. In 1952, he published the first edition of Fast and Able under the title Builders of Gloucester's Prosperity. This fiftieth-anniversary edition includes histories of schooners not collected in previous editions. It was made possible by the author's son, Jeff Thomas II, and by Nelson B. We had started out on this mission of information on fishing rods with lots of optimism. And we have also ended it in the same manner.

    Today's fishing rods Article
    Fly Fishing For Trout

Fly Fishing is such a traditional sport many refer to as an art form, and compared to other modes of fishing, incorporates so much to learn in terms of casting technique, and more particularly the study of the trout's diet, and their imitations, that it can distract anglers from focussing sufficiently on their quarry's habits and behaviour. If you want to catch more Trout, and particularly larger Trout, you need to know more about the Trout than you do about casting and their diet.

The deeper I looked, the more things just didn't make sense. I reared both Brown and Rainbow Trout in my lounge room aquarium and studied them closely. From atop steep banks of clear pools on the stream, I experimented and studied them.

There was finally but one conclusion I could make. We, as fly fishermen, to a large degree, have been kidding ourselves for a very long time. Looking realistically at many of the trout flies, it seemed that the trout must either be half blind, or quite stupid, to accept many of them as the insects being imitated. Either way, it detracted from the achievement of having deceived them.

The more I critically analyzed the whole routine of fly fishing, the more assumptions I recognised as having been made to compensate for our lack of understanding. At best, some of the assumptions may have been correct to some degree, but could never be proven or confirmed. At worst, some were just blatantly wrong.

These assumptions have been cycled for so long they have just been accepted as fact. The Trout have been considered 'Unpredictable' because their behaviour or actions didn't always fit what we would have expected when fly fishing. No-one, it seems, had ever thought about the possibility of their actions not matching our expectations because our beliefs could be flawed.

I started evaluating alternative possibilities. Gradually I put the puzzle together. Eventually, those long standing questions had answers. The trout behaviour then became extremely predictable. I started taking advantage of these findings. Having realized I didn't need to imitate anything to induce takes, I was able to construct flies which could do specific jobs for me rather than imitating anything.

With each of the situations I encountered on the water mastered, the results just automatically followed. I had seemingly mastered the sport of fly fishing.
